Though people ages 18 to 33 outpace other adults in almost every category of Internet use, their elders are rapidly closing the gap in social networking, according to a Pew report.

Internet users from all age groups increased their use of social networking from December 2008 to May 2010, with use by people 18 to 33 rising to 83 percent, from 67 percent. But those in every generation 45 and older more than doubled their participation. Adults 74 and older who are online quadrupled their social networking presence, and that now stands at 16 percent.

More good news for Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and not-so-great news for purveyors of traditional media: 81% of upscale Gen Yers use Facebook every day, nearly twice the number who watch TV or read newspaper content, according to a report from L2 Think Tank.

The report, based on a survey of 535 “high-achieving and high-earning” Gen Y adults (average age: 27), also shows that blogs and newspapers are both a part of their daily news mix; about half of respondents read both on a daily basis.

The parity between old and new was also underscored by another finding in report, that web sites are viewed as equally influential in shaping Gen Y sentiment, second only to friends’ opinions.

Meanwhile, the report also found that 42% of millennials are watching TV programs online, while 27% watch movies online.

Facebook’s putting up some big numbers in terms of U.S. web traffic. Right now, the site accounts for one out of every four pageviews in the United States — that’s 10% of all Internet visits.

According to data from analysis and intelligence firm Hitwise, Facebook’s year-over-year growth has been phenomenal. We reported in June that the social network was set to eclipse Google in web traffic; now, Hitwise is showing that in the past week, Facebook.com saw 3% more web visits and almost five times more pageviews than Google (Google).com.

By these metrics, Facebook is by far the single most popular website in the United States. Still, other sources with other measurements and criteria show some variance.

comScore has also released stats showing huge growth from Facebook — a 55% year-over-year increase, in fact. But comScore places Facebook at 151.13 million U.S. uniques for October 2010, slightly behind Google’s 173.3 monthly uniques, which means the search giant is the social network’s sole competitor for web traffic domination.

The company has been growing at a breakneck pace all year. It announced that its network had reached the extraordinary milestone of 500 million members in July. And at Web. 2.0 Summit this week, CEO Mark Zuckerberg told the audience that half of those members visit Facebook on a daily basis.

A federal agency has declared Facebook posts are legally protected speech, even for employees who write negative things about their employers.

In a lawsuit that probably won’t sit well with most employers trying to enforce social media policies, the National Labor Relations Board said that a recent Facebook (Facebook)-related termination was unlawful.

The employee in question, Dawnmarie Souza, used some vulgar language to deride her boss on Facebook when he denied one of her requests. Several of Souza’s co-workers joined in on the thread, also making negative comments about the supervisor. Souza made these comments on her own time and on her own computer.

The decision whether or not to move forward or not in Social Media is already a moot point.      There is simply too much bogged down debate over the many possible ways to measure ROI in Social Media Marketing.  Measure away, but I have to wonder who has really taken a time out to consider what viable, traditional alternatives remain in marketing, today. Current statistics and projections show that the traditional choices are about as limited as the number of British families still celebrating a Charles Dicken’s Victorian Christmas.  “God bless us everyone,” who can find much in either category.

Newspapers Are Folding

Moody's expects newspaper revenue to decline 5% to 6% by the end of 2010 and in the mid-single-digits in 2011. This may be less severe than the 22% drop in 2009, but it is a cumulative drop, none the less.  The future for the print ad does not bode very well.
